Long before this practice was established in 2023, the Jumanos, Coahuiltecan, Ndé Kónitsąąíí Gokíyaa, and Tonkawa peoples cared for this land and its communities through traditional medicine for thousands of years. Today, in what is now San Antonio, Texas, we honor these original stewards and healers.
I’m an art therapist and founder of Nguyen Art Therapy and Counseling, PLLC. I specialize in supporting those who are navigating shame, trauma, and the Asian American —particularly Vietnamese American —diaspora experience. Prior to being in private practice, I had the privilege of providing art therapy to individuals chronically harmed by homelessness and the criminal justice system.
My therapeutic approach is informed by art therapy, somatic abolitionism, and practices that are neurodivergent-affirming and LGBTQIA+-affirming. I aim to create a container where clients can explore, express, and heal in ways that honor their lived experiences.
I earned my dual Master’s degrees in Art Therapy and Clinical Counseling from Emporia State University in 2019. I presented at the American Art Therapy Association and the Kansas Art Therapy Association on issues of racial equity in the field. I am currently working on an online archive to increase accessibility to the works of art therapy pioneer Charles Anderson. My active licenses and credentials include:
ATR-BC – Board-Certified Art Therapist (#20-042)
LPC – Licensed Professional Counselor, Texas (#88844)
I was born in Oklahoma and am a second-generation Vietnamese refugee. My mom herself is a second-generation Teochew immigrant. I went to the University of Oklahoma to pursue a degree in art history and met art therapist, Dr. Joan Phillips, who introduced me to the field of art therapy. I've lived all over the U.S., but for now, home is Texas. As an artist, I've worked with all sorts of mediums and materials, but my constant love has been drawing, painting, and printmaking. My other activities include reading history and curating the Charles W. Anderson Online Archive.
